Cardinal Sarah’s statements come as he learned of the Nice attack, where two people were beheaded and another stabbed by a Muslim terrorist inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption

Newsdesk (October 29, 2020 5:15 pm Gaudium Press)Nice, the French pearl of the Côte d’Azur, woke up today in horror and amazement: at 9 a.m., local time, an attacker armed with a knife murdered at least 3 people inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, a symbolic neo-Gothic temple, located in the center of the city.

An elderly lady who was saying her morning prayers was beheaded next to the holy water basin. The sacristan was also beheaded. The third victim, a lady, managed to take refuge in a nearby café, but she succumbed to the injuries inflicted upon her by the attacker.

The aggressor, Brahim, 21, was wounded by a police bullet and, while he was being arrested, he kept shouting: “Allah is great.” He was taken to the hospital and interrogated.

The attack occurred only 13 days after Professor Samuel Paty was beheaded as he left a school in the north of the country.

It is also reminiscent of the beheading of Father Jacques Hamel in his church Saint-Étienne du Rouvray in northern France on 26 July 2016.

Cardinal Sarah’s reaction

Cardinal Sarah, the prefect of the Congregation of Divine Worship, reacted quickly to the sinister events via Twitter:

“Islamism is a monstrous fanaticism that must be fought with strength and determination. It will not cease its war. We Africans know this, unfortunately very well. The barbarians are always enemies of peace. The West, today France, must understand this. Let us pray. +RS”.

Another detainee, this time in Lyon

A few hours ago, a man of Afghan origin was arrested in Lyon, carrying a 30-centimetre knife. He was preparing to enter a subway.

The man was arrested while brandishing his weapon, exactly in the same location where 13 people were injured in 2013 as a result of the explosion of a bomb set by Islamic State militants.
